Carbide drills often cause burrs, breakout and edge cracks when breaking through workpieces due to sudden concentrated thrust. Proper parameters, tool setup and clamping can fully prevent such damage.
- Slow down feed 0.5–1.5mm before penetration to cut down thrust force. Lower spindle speed for brittle materials.
- Put a sacrificial backing plate under thin workpieces to support the exit side and stop breakout.
- Select drills with split point and honed corners; smooth chip grooves avoid chips tearing edges.
- Clamp workpieces rigidly to eliminate vibration and shifting during breakthrough.
- Apply ample coolant to reduce plastic deformation and sticky burrs.
- Never use dull drills or keep full heavy feed all the way through.
Adjust breakthrough feed, add backing support and use matched carbide drills to get clean hole exits. Contact our team for material-specific drilling solutions if you have mass production demands.
