Deep hole drilling is one of the most challenging machining processes, with chip clogging being a common and troublesome issue. It not only affects hole finish accuracy but also easily causes tool wear, breakage and production downtime. Therefore, adopting correct processing methods is essential to ensure smooth and efficient deep hole drilling.
1. Choose Suitable Drill Tools
Use deep-hole dedicated carbide drills with optimized flute geometry, larger chip gullets and smooth flute surface to ensure unobstructed chip evacuation. Avoid standard short-flute drills for deep hole processing.
2. Optimize Cutting Parameters
Reduce cutting speed and feed rate properly in deep drilling; too aggressive parameters create thick, tangled chips that block flutes. Match parameters according to workpiece material (steel, aluminum, alloy).
3. Apply Intermittent Peck Drilling
Adopt peck drilling cycle: drill a certain depth then retract the drill fully to break and discharge chips periodically. It is the most effective way to prevent chip accumulation in deep holes.
4. Improve Coolant Supply
Use high-pressure internal coolant to flush chips out continuously. Ensure sufficient coolant flow and proper concentration to lubricate, cool and carry away chips timely.
5. Control Chip Breaking
Select drills with chip breaker grooves to form small, loose chips instead of long curly swarf, which is the main cause of hole clogging and tool breakage.
6. Maintain Rigid Machining Setup
Enhance workpiece clamping and machine rigidity; vibration will cause irregular chip shape, worsen chip winding and easily lead to clogging in deep holes.
In short, chip clogging in deep hole drilling can be effectively avoided by selecting proper drills, optimizing cutting parameters, adopting peck drilling, strengthening coolant supply and controlling chip breaking. With reasonable operation and process improvement, you can greatly extend tool life, stabilize machining quality and improve overall production efficiency.
